Introduction to Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that targets restructuring the outer ear for functional or aesthetic needs. Many children and adults are self-conscious about having ears that protrude or stick out, often covering their ears with their hair or hats. For many children, protruding ears can be a cause for teasing and bullying. Other reasons for otoplasty include rebuilding an ear after trauma or injury, correcting misshapen ears or ear lobes, or addressing missing cartilage in ears, which can involve both ears or just one ear. Fortunately, Dr. Michelle Copeland and Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin are experts in minimally invasive surgical otoplasty techniques, which can often be performed awake in our private and fully accredited operating room. If you are interested in learning more about otoplasty in New York City, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Michelle Copeland and Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin at our Fifth Avenue practice.

What is an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that corrects congenital or circumstantial deformities of the ear structure. The type of surgical alteration depends on the extent of protrusion, the size of the ear, and other factors. Ear surgery can involve ear enhancement for smaller ears, ear reduction for oversized or protruding ears (also called ear-pinning surgery), or ear reshaping to improve overall ear aesthetics. While many adults undergo otoplasty, we can also perform otoplasty in children starting around 6 or 7 years old once the ears are fully developed.

Your Otoplasty Surgery journey

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting an otoplasty in New York City is to schedule your consultation at the practice of Dr. Michelle Copeland and Dr. Libby Copeland-Halperin. During your appointment, your surgeon will talk with you about your or your child’s medical history, aesthetic and functional goals, and any expectations or concerns you might have. She will examine your ears to determine the best techniques to employ, including incision placement. At this time, she will also outline the procedure, its risks, benefits, and associated recovery timeline.

If you decide to proceed with the procedure after the consultation, our expert team will then help you schedule your surgical date, discuss pricing options, and share any pre-operative instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Liposuction Surgery?

Dr. Copeland and Dr. Copeland-Halperin perform otoplasty in our private and fully accredited surgical suite. On the day of your otoplasty in New York City, your surgeon will review the surgical plan again. Otoplasty can often be performed awake with a local anesthetic. Other times, the procedure is performed under IV sedation, also known as twilight anesthesia, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Once you are numb, your surgeon will create an incision behind the ear and manipulate the tissue, cartilage, and skin, if necessary. She will focus on facial symmetry, aesthetic goals, and the overall balance of the facial contours. In the case of ear-pinning surgery, additional sutures on the back of the ear cartilage can be placed to “pin” the entire ear closer to the side of the head.

Depending on the specific procedure and technique, otoplasty can take one to two hours.

Otoplasty Recovery

After your otoplasty procedure, our staff will monitor you or your child in the recovery room until the sedation wears off. Patients are recommended to have a family member or friend drive them home for full safety.

Most patients return to work and engage in light activity within a few days and strenuous physical activity after a few weeks.

After surgery, you will wear a special headband to protect the ears. You will be given pain medication to manage any discomfort and antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Children may need to be monitored during the first 24-36 hours after surgery to ensure the initial surgical dressing remains dry and in place.
